Angela Wang, also known by her moniker "Awanqi", is an award-winning illustrator based in Texas. This piece from 2017 aptly titled "st. joan of arc" shows off her jaw-dropping skills, her renown style, and her excellent choice of subject. In a crucible of Saints taking place above Joan's tomb, Joan herself is met by her voices in their true form: from left to right we see St. Catherine of Antioch, St. Margaret of Alexandria, and St. Michael Archangel; the three saints are there to see their martyred daughter through the gates of Heaven. St. Michael shares the grip of his sword with Joan, which we can imagine is something the Archangel would never allow anyone else to experience. Joan's own sword is temporarily resting in St. Margaret's hands: her mission is over, and so is her time among the living, she can rest now.
St. Michael is also holding is scale, the one he will use to weight the embarking souls' merits on Judgment Day. On the scale are what appear to be the figurines of a Templar Knight on one side, and of St. Michael himself on the other. Some words are engraved on Joan's tomb: her name "JEANNE D'ARC", and the words "JE ME ATTENS A DIEU" which is French for "I'm waiting on God", followed by Joan's coat of arms engraved right below. The stained glass behind Joan is painted with the scene of her own martyrdom, with flames engulfing her body. Besides Angela's unquestioned mastery of her craft, this piece is a tasteful homage to Joan and the Christian lore surrounding her character, with a wonderful color palette bursting with bright colors and light, which is actually way more historically accurate than the grim darkness and muted colors that plague movies and other modern representations of the Middle Ages.
